Worthy farm

banthan, Devon, UK

WoCo were commissioned in 2020 to offer architectural services for the restoration and conversion of this fantastic property situated just a few miles from Bantham beach in Devon. The historic farmstead sits within a 14 acre site with extensive views across the valley to the South and beyond.

The project has been developed and carried out in phases, starting with the extensive restoration of an impressive Grade II Listed Farm House, which is the centre piece of the site. The house was in a state of disrepair with no central heating and had suffered from some unsympathetic historic alterations, which needed to be unpicked. Our proposals included significant improvements to the thermal performance including wholesale insulation to the external building envelope using natural and breathable products such as diathonite and wood fibre insulation. In addition, all of the windows were replaced and the house now benefits from a Ground Source Heat Pump, which provides all water and heating. The roof space was converted to provide additional bedrooms and a bathroom to create a 6 bedroom house.

The house is surrounded by a number of listed outbuildings, two of which are historic agricultural barns, which have now been reimagined to provide additional accommodation and ancillary uses. Other outbuildings provide plant rooms.

The project also includes planning and listed building consent for a walled garden, containing a natural pool, poorhouse, greenhouse, and extensive growing beds. We worked closely with Ameld Design for the landscaping scheme.
