WoCo were commissioned by local social enterprise The Woodland Presents to design the WoodLab. The concept for the building lies somewhere between a community wood-workshop and a FabLab, that unites small wood-based businesses together with local timber suppliers, processors and foresters.

The building uses local materials and features a large open plan workshop, with the option to sub-divide into smaller spaces to allow optimum user flexibility. The first floor includes administration space and a mezzanine gallery to observe the activities below.

WoCo successfully achieved full planning permission in October 2018 and has subsequently assisted as a consultant during the technical phases. The project was successfully completed in 2020 and WoodLab has hosted a variety of users and activities since then, including providing workshop space for our own Design and Make activities. In that sense, the building brings and promotes a real sense of community and we’ve been lucky to meet many talented craftspeople along the way, which has resulted in multiple collaborations - a timber based eco-system, no less!
