walnut & steel Staircase + BOW TIE DINING TABLE

Totnes, Devon

Completed in 2016. WoCo worked alongside one of Totnes’ most established architectural firms – Harrison Sutton – to create this unique staircase for an exciting new-build house in the heart of the town centre. Our design and make approach combined steel, walnut and brass to create a uniquely elegant and impressive open-tread staircase with a bridge link over to connect the first floor spaces. We used our experience of digital fabrication to create the structural elements in laser-cut hot-rolled steel, which we then combined with hand crafted walnut treads in our Devon workshop. The subtle addition of brass pinstripes brings a simple and beautiful accent to the overall aesthetic.

The design was meticulously planned and organised to work alongside and around other trades during various stages of the new-build construction on site. The result is a fantastic example of our approach to design and make – inventive and robust, the stair will hold court in the house for many years to come.

We were also asked to design a dining table to match the staircase as a subsequent commission from the same client.

One unique feature of this table is that it actually tapers on one side – so it is wider at one end than the other. This follows the taper of the room, which is in turn informed by the historic natural stone walls of the site. A rare example of site context informing the actual furniture makes good table talk.
