butterwalk cottage

Totnes, Devon

We were commissioned to provide architectural services for the restoration and alterations to this beautiful Grade II Listed 16th C. House in the heart of Totnes. In addition, the clients asked us to design and fabricate some bespoke pieces including a replacement staircase and some joinery ‘pods’ within the master bedroom.

The house was in a state of disrepair and hadn’t been altered since the late 80’s. The brief was to improve the flow by reimagining the staircase, which acts as the centre piece of the new internal architectural reinterpretation. The existing staircase by comparison was clumsy in its spatial efficiency and created a dark and cramped feel on arrival to the property. The new staircase was carefully designed to offer and capitalise on a sense of verticality and light from an adjacent first floor window.

Furthermore, the internal arrangement of rooms was altered and updated to include a new kitchen, as well as a master bedroom with ensuite.
