Attached Barn

east allington, devon

We were commissioned to reimagine and extend a historic barn, attached to an existing farmhouse.

The existing building is Grade II Listed, and parts of it date back to medieval times. Through careful heritage and archeological analysis, the barn was in fact historically a house and so the process of reminagining the next chapter therefore brings the building full circle, back into domestic use.

Making the most of an existing full height space, we have carefully reintroduced mezzanine levels either side to create a dramatic spatial quality that retains the legibility of the original spaces - complete with original fireplaces. Central to the design response is a sense of craft and use of natural materials, with a bespoke timber kitchen, timber balustrades, glazed timber joinery and timber panelled walls. Natural lime plasters and natural stone walls, combine with the timber elements to create a soft, yet robust aesthetic, which feels appropriate to the space.

Historical analysis led us to understand and reinstate a gable end roof construction - offering impressive views from the proposed location for the master bedroom to the landscape beyond. A carefully designed, semi-subterranean boot room provides an unexpected yet subtle extension to the rear of the property, again with beautiful joinery to provide bench seating, coat and boat storage, as part of the entrance sequence.
